The United Nations has announced the establishment of a special trust fund for the Afghan people to help households in need of liquidity to survive this winter and stay in their country despite the unrest.

Achim Steiner, the director of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), said that Germany, which has the largest contribution, has committed to providing € 50 million to the fund, adding that UNDP is in contact with others. donors to mobilize resources.

"Talks in recent weeks have focused on how we can find a way to mobilize these resources in the face of the ongoing economic collapse and in line with the international community's repeated commitment not to leave the people of Afghanistan," he said. Steiner briefing reporters. "We have to intervene, we have to stabilize a 'people's economy' and, in addition to saving lives, we also have to save livelihoods," he said.

"Because otherwise we will actually face a scenario this winter and next year in which millions and millions of Afghans will simply not be able to stay on their land, in their homes, in their villages and survive. "The effects of this are not difficult to understand."

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Tuesday that Afghanistan's economy is expected to shrink by up to 30% this year and that it is likely to further fuel a refugee crisis affecting neighboring countries, Turkey and Europe.

The Taliban seizure of power resulted in the freezing of billions of central bank assets and the cessation of access to capital by international financial institutions, although humanitarian aid continued to flow into Afghanistan. The liquidity of the banks in the country is running out, the civil servants have not been paid and the food prices have skyrocketed.

Kanye Wignaraya, director of the UNDP Regional Office for Asia-Pacific, said cash would be provided to Afghans working on public works projects such as drought control and flood control, and benefits would be given to small businesses. A temporary basic income will also be paid to vulnerable seniors and people with disabilities, he added.

UNDP has estimated the activities that will be covered in the first 12 months at about $ 667 million, according to her.
