"Our positions are identical in condemning the provocative practice and aggressive rhetoric of Turkey," said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in his statements after the 9th Greece-Cyprus-Egypt Tripartite Summit held in Athens with the participation of the leaders of the three countries.

Mr. Mitsotakis stressed that the harassment of the Nautical Geo research vessel as well as the threats of new illegal drilling within the Cyprus EEZ unfortunately leave no room for misinterpretation of its intentions, adding that "unfortunately the Ankara leadership does not seem to understand ».

"These aspirations of Turkey to the detriment of its neighbors in the Eastern Mediterranean obviously pose a threat to peace in the wider region," Mitsotakis added, adding: That is why the answer of all three of our countries, as reflected in the Joint Declaration, is clear. The only way forward is the binding decisions of the UN Security Council. And the first necessary move is the resumption of negotiations promoted by the Secretary General of the Organization ".

As the Prime Minister stressed, "for its part, Greece declares its intentions with its actions. "It shields its defense, signs cooperation agreements with all, always in the light of international law, and forms alliances that consolidate its strategic role in the wider region, but at the same time the power of security, international legitimacy and peace."

"Both Greece and Cyprus have signed demarcation agreements with Egypt based on international law of the sea and which were the product of long-term, but bona fide and honest negotiations. "With these exemplary agreements, we have shown the way to build relations of cooperation and good neighborliness away from logics of imposing unilateral arbitrariness, policy of guns, threats of war, practices that certainly do not belong to the 21st century", added Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The energy becomes a bridge between Egypt and Europe

Referring to the energy issue shortly after the signing of the Memorandum on the interconnection of the three countries for the transmission of electricity, the Prime Minister stressed that "energy becomes not only a meeting point of our common interests and a strategic asset of our states, but also a bridge between Egypt and Europe, as the former can play a key role in the latter 's energy security. "

"At a time of great turmoil in the energy market, Egypt is decisively participating in the Mediterranean gas and electricity transmission network. "Greece and Cyprus are now actively participating in this network - and with the signing of the relevant Memorandum", noted Mr. Mitsotakis, adding that "at the same time, at a time when we seek diversification of our energy sources, Egypt can become a provider of electricity which will be produced mainly by the sun. And his stop towards Europe will henceforth be Greece. "In other words, all three of our countries are being upgraded as energy poles of the Mediterranean with wider significance," he added.

Joint Declaration

The Joint Declaration of the leaders of the three countries sends multiple messages to the neighboring country. It emphasizes the "importance of respecting the sovereignty and sovereign rights of all States in their maritime zones in accordance with international law, as reflected in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)".

"In this context, we rejected the illegal drilling and seismic surveys by Turkish vessels in the Cypriot EEZ / continental shelf, in sea areas that have already been demarcated in accordance with international law. We also reiterated our condemnation of the continuing violations of Greek national airspace and territorial waters in the Aegean Sea and all other illegal activities in areas within the Greek continental shelf, in violation of international law. Therefore, we asked Turkey to refrain, consistently and honestly, from provocations and unilateral actions that violate international law, including the harassment of research vessels validly licensed by Greece or Cyprus, thus contributing to favorable conditions. "We stressed that a productive, result-oriented dialogue cannot take place in an aggressive environment or under the threat of violence," the Joint Declaration said.
With regard to the Cyprus issue, we reaffirm "our strong support for a just, comprehensive and sustainable settlement in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions calling for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with a single sovereignty, a single international personality and a single nationality." with the EU acquis, values and principles ".

"Regarding Varosha, we referred to the Presidential Declaration of the Security Council of 23 July 2021, which reaffirmed the status of Varosha, as set out in previous United Nations Security Council resolutions, including resolutions 550 (1984) and 789 (1992). , condemned the announcement in Cyprus, on July 20, 2021, by Turkish and Turkish-Cypriot leaders regarding the further opening of part of the barbed wire area of Varosia, called for the immediate reversal of the course of these actions and the reversal of all steps taken in Varosia since October 2020 and stressed the importance of full respect and implementation of its Resolutions, including the transfer of Varosia to the UN administration ", stressed the need to" resume negotiations from where they left off " and expressed our support for the appointment of a Special Adviser to the GeneralSecretary-General of the United Nations with the mandate to be active with all parties involved, in order to restart the negotiation process. We also stressed that an agreed, comprehensive and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem will not only benefit Cyprus, the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots, but will also make a decisive contribution to peace and stability in the wider region. "

The three leaders also sent a message regarding Libya, recalling that "the Memorandum of Understanding on the Delimitation of Maritime Jurisdiction in the Mediterranean and the Memorandum of Understanding on Military Cooperation and Security Cooperation signed in November 2019 between Mr. international law and the UN arms embargo on Libya, and both undermine regional stability; in addition, the Memorandum of Understanding on the delimitation of maritime jurisdictions produces legal effects ".

As for Libya, it acknowledges "the progress made in the political process so far, we reiterated the importance of maintaining the timetable agreed in the Roadmap for holding free and fair elections on December 24, 2021, without foreign interference."

"Respect for the ceasefire and the arms embargo, as well as the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries, are essential for peace and stability in the country. We praised the pivotal role of the 5 + 5 Joint Military Committee, through which many tangible positive steps have been taken, in particular the opening of the Coastal Road and the exchange of prisoners on both sides. "Overall, we recognize that many challenges remain and must be addressed if the goal is for the process to lead to the unification of the country and its institutions," the Declaration said.

N. Anastasiadis: The position of the T / C side is unacceptable for two independent states in Cyprus

Turkey must understand that it will also benefit from a settlement of the Cyprus issue on the basis of UN principles and resolutions, and not on the basis of an expansionist policy, said the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis, during his statements after the tripartite conference.

"Dialogue is the only solution, and finally Turkey must realize that it will benefit much more if it contributes to helping to resolve the Cyprus issue on the basis of principles, and not on the basis of an expansionist and revisionist policy that characterizes the latter and categorizes it in countries. "in countries with expansionist dispositions," said Mr. Anastasiadis, referring to the latest developments in the Cyprus issue.

He further added that the new position of the Turkish Cypriot side is "unacceptable for two independent states" and added that during the recent meeting in New York during which the UN Secretary-General should be the solution, erased through the resolutions and decisions of the UN and the Security Council "the Turkish Cypriot response was" the reiteration of the position that no dialogue will start unless the equality of the illegal Turkish Cypriot establishment is first recognized, with the legal status of the internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus ".

As Mr. Anastasiadis said, the proposal of the Secretary General was the appointment of a special representative who would cultivate the prospects of a climate of resumption of dialogue. "The intention of the Secretary General was not achieved, as a result of which we are at a dead end today. Our will is to engage in dialogue, not to deviate from international law, but to implement UN resolutions, to implement all that will create the prospects of a European state such as the Republic of Cyprus, protecting not only the human rights of the EU. K but also of T / K ".

Mr. Anastasiadis said that the determination and the efforts that he makes together with Mr. Mitsotakis within the EU and with Mr. Sisi within the Organization of the Islamic Conference, aim at the diplomatic activation with the ultimate goal of dialogue.

"Eastern Mediterranean countries can not work closely together, be a pillar of stability and peace and the only one who disrupts international law is Turkey," said Mr. Anastasiadis, adding: "The trilateral meetings do not exclude anyone, they aim stability, and Turkey is welcome as long as it respects international law and the sovereignty of its neighbors. "

He accused Turkey of intransigence and "for the violations committed in the EEZ of Cyprus in violation of the international law of the sea, the violation of the Famagusta regime, in the recent lease - not of land that belonged to T / C but to E / K- under possession of property leased to Turkey for long-term purposes easily understood by Turkey. The creation of a base for unmanned aircraft and the creation of a military port in the region. What is worse, however, is that in addition to the deteriorating provocation of the revision policy, which is not only addressed in the case of Cyprus but extends to the Aegean in Syria, Libya, Iraq and elsewhere, there is a policy - the Blue Homeland - that Mr. "Erdogan to control the region and beyond", stressed Mr. Anastasiadis.

Finally, he expressed his "warmest thanks for the warm hospitality and the excellent organization and agenda of the conference".

Abdel Fattah al-Sisi: We support a just solution to the Cyprus problem

"We support a just settlement of the Cyprus issue on the basis of international law and UN resolutions," said Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. "We also discussed the issue of terrorism, but also illegal immigration."

At the same time, as he said, "our intention is to strengthen our cooperation in the field of energy and I emphasize the importance of the signing today of the memorandum of cooperation of the tripartite electricity interconnection". The Egyptian president stressed that "we consider this as a prelude to the general electricity connection with Europe. "Our big plan is to establish the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum for the exploitation of hydrocarbon deposits in all countries with respect for international law."

Concluding his remarks, the Egyptian president said: "We have presented Egypt's approach to human rights, but also the conditions under which every human being will feel safe. I would like to thank you for your efforts to strengthen the tripartite cooperation and I look forward to hosting the 10th Summit of the Tripartite Cooperation Greece - Cyprus - Egypt ".

Earlier, in the presence of the three leaders, the competent Ministers of Energy signed a Memorandum of Cooperation for the interconnection of the electricity networks of the three countries, as well as for cooperation in matters of Abroad. In fact, the signing of this Memorandum of Cooperation comes at a time when the debate on Europe's supply chain and energy security is at the top of the agenda in Brussels, while the issue will also be addressed at the forthcoming European Council.

According to government sources, the 9th Greece-Egypt-Cyprus Tripartite Summit marks the reaffirmation of the Prime Minister's strategic importance to the network of regional cooperation schemes, which are based on common perceptions on a number of critical issues, as well as on a number of critical issues. sectors with a core energy sector.
