Syria today accused the Israeli army of killing Madat al-Saleh, a former member of the Syrian parliament who had served a 12-year sentence in an Israeli prison, state television Al-Ehbariya reported, citing the government.
The Syrian news agency SANA reported that al-Saleh was killed when "an Israeli enemy targeted him while he was returning home" in Ain al-Tineh, a Syrian village near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
The Syrian government has spoken of a "brazen criminal act".
An Israeli army spokesman said the country's armed forces were not commenting on reports from foreign countries.
Saleh spent 12 years in an Israeli prison after being arrested in 1985 on charges of "resisting" Israeli authorities, according to Damascus. He was later elected Member of Parliament.
