A bilateral co-operation agreement between Greece and Britain, covering a wide range of areas, including defense and foreign policy, will be signed in London on Monday by Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and British counterpart Liz Tras.

"This agreement is not purely defensive, like the agreements with the United States, France and the United Arab Emirates. It is a framework agreement, which will allow the deepening of our relations with a country, with which we are connected by traditional ties of friendship for centuries ", Nikos Dendias explains in an interview with the Free Press on Sunday. Focusing on this agreement with Britain, "a country that played a decisive role in Greek independence, a country with which we fought on the same side in two World Wars, a nuclear power, a permanent member of the Security Council and a guarantor force in Cyprus." , the Foreign Minister underlines that "we are laying the foundations for the deepening of this relationship in a new context, after its withdrawal from the European Union".

Also, Nikos Dendias announces that if the circumstances allow it in the future, "we will conclude other agreements based on the protection of national interests, in the context of mutual understanding and mutual respect between states, always on the basis of International Law and relations good neighborhood ". Moreover, he points out that "the safeguarding of national interests in practice and the expansion of our collaborations and alliances, was and remains a key axis of our country's foreign policy."

Turkey's provocative rhetoric is unacceptable and unjustified, unless it sees itself as a seemingly aggressive

Referring to Turkey's provocative rhetoric against Greece, the Foreign Minister described it as unacceptable and unjustified. More specifically, Nikos Dendias made it clear again that the agreements with France and the USA are not directed against anyone, they are purely defensive in nature and adds that "for this reason we are impressed by the particularly strong reaction of Turkey, which in recent years weeks has escalated the provocative rhetoric against our country. This rhetoric is both unacceptable and unjustified. "Unless Turkey sees itself as a quasi-aggressor."

Referring to the March European Council, he said that "if there is a recurrence of Turkish behavior, the EU should take measures that indicate that this behavior can not be tolerated." The aim, he clarifies, is to send a clear message that the current Turkish behavior, which now goes beyond common sense, is unacceptable and reprehensible.

According to Mr. Dendias, it is now clear that the tolerance of European countries towards Turkish provocation is decreasing. More specifically, he states that taking into account the Turkish actions in the besieged city of Famagusta, but also the recent challenges in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Greece and Cyprus, the Foreign Ministers of the European Union, at the urging of the High Representative, Josep Bo consider relevant measures in the near future. The Foreign Minister even restrains the fact that this proposal was supported, in addition to the countries that are friends close to the Greek positions, and other countries, which until now kept a low profile. At the same time, countries that would otherwise be opposed remained silent, as he characteristically states.

Greece's agreements with the USA and France further shield our country from external threats

Emphasizing the importance of Greece's agreements with France and the United States, the Foreign Minister notes that in principle they further shield our country from external threats, wherever they come from, and points out that both are important pieces in the wider effort we are making to consolidate it. security and stability, both for our country and for the wider region, always on the basis of International Law. In addition, he refers to the special symbolism of the agreements, noting that the US and France recognize that Greece, in addition to embracing the same values, plays an important stabilizing and "leading role" in the wider region, using the expression of the US Secretary of State. Foreign Minister Anthony Blinken. He also confesses that in his contacts in Paris and Washington it became particularly clear that they appreciate the fact that Greece has expanded its horizons and has ceased to pursue a limited "Turkish-central" foreign policy. It is now clear that Greece has a role and a say in regional developments, he clearly states.

Asked in particular about upgrading the US presence in our country, at a time when their strategic interest is shifting to areas other than Europe, he points out that while other European countries are willing to pay the United States to deploy forces on the ground The United States decides to invest, both politically and economically, in Greece. In areas of special interest to us, such as Thrace and Crete, and this regardless of the Turkish reaction, he adds. Undoubtedly - he further emphasizes - this move underscores the strategic importance that the United States continues to attach to Greece for the consolidation of security in our wider region. In addition, it highlights that the United States, for the first time in history, has gone one step further by making explicit reference to the protection of our sovereign rights under the International Law of the Sea. Evaluating the conclusion of the agreement with the USA, he emphasizes that it is a significant Greek success, which must be evaluated in the light of developments in the world system, "not in a narrow Greek-central perspective and with outdated ideas, as unfortunately various voices in the opposition do. who are looking in vain for excuses not to admit this success ".

With regard to the dimension of the agreement with France, it states that it contributes, inter alia, to the strengthening of solidarity between European states, as well as to the strengthening of the European defense industry, and is in favor of the creation of a European autonomous defense identity, integrated into the European Atlantic framework. "The effort made by both our country and France is fully compatible with strengthening ties with the United States, both bilaterally and within NATO," he said.

He makes special reference to the Conference on Libya, held in the capital Tripoli, in which he participated as a guest of his Libyan counterpart. "This in itself indicates the importance that Libya itself attaches to relations with our country. This relationship was built, built, through our constant contacts with all the key "players" in Libya. With business missions, with the opening of our embassy in Tripoli and the consulate general in Benghazi. Trust and mutual respect are cultivated, built. "And we invest in these relationships." He also suggests that the stability and prosperity of Libya, which is a twenty-minute flight from Crete, is an immediate priority for Greece. The first step in this direction, he said, is the immediate withdrawal of foreign troops and mercenaries, including those backed by Turkey, and the holding of elections on the agreed date, ie December 24th.
