The New Zealand government will lift strict restrictive measures to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus only after 19% of the target population of the immunization campaign has been fully vaccinated for COVID-90, Prime Minister Jasarda said today.

Until recently, New Zealand had not been able to handle the latest outbreak, which is attributed to the most contagious Delta variant and focuses on Auckland. The evolution of the epidemiological situation forced Ms. Ardern to change her approach and from the virus eradication strategy to focus on vaccination.

The Prime Minister explained that after reaching 90% of all regional directorates, the South Pacific country will have one of the highest levels of immunization against COVID-19 in the world. By this stage, 68% of New Zealanders have been fully vaccinated and 86% have received at least one dose.

"Ultimately, we balance the desire to reopen quickly with the need to keep people safe," Ardern told a news conference in the capital, Wellington.

Once the country achieves the goal, a new traffic light-like system will be implemented to manage outbreaks in places. Complete vaccination certificates will be central to the new system, marking the final end of national lockdowns.

A total of 129 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed today, a record for the third time this week, although Auckland has been locked down for more than two months. In the rest of the country of 5 million, looser measures are in place.

In all, New Zealand has recorded 28 deaths from COVID-19 out of 2.389 laboratory-confirmed infections from SARS-CoV-2, numbers that remain internationally enviable.

However, the New Zealand health authorities have warned that the cases may increase further, until the level of vaccination coverage rises.
