"I had no idea what was going on. Few things.
Nothing more than others.
So you can not make me feel guilty. "

Η Reni Pittaki puts its stamp on a masterful monologue, in his new work Christopher Hampton, inspired by her life, and her confessions Brunhilde Pomsel, one of Goebbels' secretaries. The play is directed by Giannis Moschos, at Ilisia - Volanakis Theater, from the October 27.

A show that makes us wonder about our moral principles and the discounts we are willing to make in the name of our personal interest.

Ο director of the show, Yannis Moschos notes:
"A woman narrates in a fascinating way her youth in Nazi Germany, from the rise of Nazism to the years of World War II to the defeat and collapse of Germany. Is she an innocent victim of historical circumstances or an accomplice of the Nazis? An ordinary woman who does not know if you should sympathize or condemn. Hampton's work puts us in the common sense of the past and raises a number of questions about our present and our future. Can an ordinary person, like most of us, influence the course of history? How much do we each influence the reality in which we live? Are we also complicit in what is happening to us? "

The biography and the unique personal journey of Brunilde Pomsel, ask us questions that still haunt us.

Christopher Hampton (1946-) is one of the most important contemporary English writers. His work includes plays, translations of plays into English, original screenplays, adaptations of novels for theater and cinema. In Greece he is known for the theatrical adaptation of Laclos's novel "Dangerous Relationships" (1985). Hampton also wrote the screenplay for the Oscar-winning film of the same name by Steven Friars (1988). He has also been honored with awards: Lawrence Olivier, Tony, Cannes Film Festival, BAFTA, Evening Stantard etc.

The monologue "A German Secretary" is Hampton's most recent play. It was recently played in London, in 2019, with Maggie Smith playing the role, directed by Jonathan Kent. The play is based on the testimonies of Brunhilde Pomsel (1911-2017), who was Goebbels' secretary. In 2016, Pomsel, at an advanced age, agreed to speak publicly for the first time - after 70 years - about the period she worked for the Nazis, in the documentary: Ein Deutsches Leben [A German Life], Blackbox Film, 2016; of the Viennese collective of Christian Krunes, Florian Weigensmer, Roland Schroethofer and Olaf S. Miller. Hampton extracted the material of his work from the recorded pages of the discussions that the team of directors had with Pomsel.

While watching the film, I was ready to believe her claims that she had no idea about the "Final Solution to the Jewish Question", even though she worked in Goebbels' office, reading the recordings, I was not convinced, mainly because of the unbelievable her indifference to what might be happening in the outside world. […] [Brunhilde Pomsel] is a member of the electorate we are so familiar with today: the man who is always positive about the authorities. The irony is that the service for which he worked - the Goebbels Ministry of Propaganda - is exactly what he discovered and perfected the techniques used so cynically by today's politicians to deceive, exploit and tell lies to people like she. To put it simply, I have no idea if he is telling the truth, and it is precisely this great ambiguity that I found very appealing to deal with. "In general, I always prefer to leave the judgments and conclusions to the public, and the case of Brunhilde Pomsel seems to me to be the most appropriate."

Excerpt from the note of Christopher Hampton in the publication of his play (A German Life, Faber and Faber, London 2019, pp. V-VI).
