Citizens are concerned about the phenomenon of phishing, during which online scams are carried out in electronic transactions and interception of bank card details.
The more common it becomes to buy various products over the Internet, the more fraudulent cases there are with unsuspecting buyers who trust their money to dubious online companies. Speaking in a report by Athens 9.84, they emphasize that the lure of these "monkey" electronic companies is the very low prices they give to branded items in order to attract as many customers as possible. "These e-companies then disappear 'by magic' from the internet, with all that entails for the one who has placed a specific order and receives another item at a low price", as they characteristically state.
According to the city station, another popular methodology used by cybercriminals is misleading messages from alleged banks, which aim to steal personal data and bank account details.
In these messages, citizens are asked to follow a link and this link leads to a fraudulent website identical to that of the recipient bank. Recipients do not realize the difference and so they fill in e-Banking codes, Disposable Codes (OTP) and other details.
How to protect yourself
Circles of the Hellenic Police, in which we raised the issue, indicated to us some indicative ways for the protection of citizens - consumers from the experts of the Internet. Indicative:
• Be especially wary of messages that inform you of alleged problems with your accounts, cards or e-Banking.
• Do not disclose to anyone and for any reason login codes for e-Banking, One-Time Passwords (OTP) that you receive via text message (SMS, Viber), your card details, as well as your personal and financial details, even under the pretext that this way they will deposit you money. To deposit money, just provide the IBAN of your account.
• Check if an online investment platform is licensed by an existing and competent supervisory authority before opening an account with it.
• Cross the account number with your supplier or customer before you make any payment.
