A Memorandum of Cooperation for the reconstruction and upgrading of areas of Eastern Attica (Mati) affected by the fires of 2018, with funding from resources raised from the contribution of the Republic of Cyprus and from private donations, was signed by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis Nikos Anastasiadis after the meeting they had in the afternoon at the Maximos Palace, on the sidelines of the 9th Tripartite Summit of Greece - Cyprus - Egypt.
The Memorandum of Cooperation concerns the following two projects:
- Construction of a complex of social housing
The selected area for the construction of the houses includes a property of the Municipality of Rafina which is in the process of transfer to the Greek State, as well as private land which will come to the Municipality as a land contribution and will be transferred to the Greek State.
The location of the buildings and the configuration of the free spaces (master plan) ensures fire zones and rainwater drainage, while at the same time, these sections are functionally integrated with the configuration of sidewalks, bicycle paths and greenery. The architectural design of the residential units is modern, of high aesthetics, with fire and bioclimatic provisions.
The specific project will consist of seven buildings with a total area of 7.840 sq.m., with the number of apartments that will result for each building from the final study (indicatively, 14 apartments of 80 sq.m.), after recording and estimating the housing needs to be covered.
- Configuration of the existing green space in a forest recreation area
The configuration of the wider area will aim at upgrading the forest ecosystem with parallel interventions for the provision of forest recreation services, through projects and works to increase traffic and functionality.
The implementation of the project concerning the configuration of a forest recreation area is expected to begin in January 2022, while the start of the implementation of the project related to the construction of housing units is expected to begin in October 2022.
According to researchers, the cost of the projects will amount to about 12 million euros. Of these, approximately 11 million euros (10.973.282,97 euros) come from donations from the Republic of Cyprus (10 million euros) and donations from Cypriot citizens (973.282,97 euros were collected through a special account, while in case it is required larger amount for the completion of the projects, the Greek State will cover the additional required amount.
In their statements immediately after the signing of the Memorandum, Mr. Mitsotakis underlined that "it took us a long time, more than we would have expected, in order to proceed with the spatial and urban reconstruction of the area, which was affected by the fires", added however "We are now pleased to launch an important intervention that will bear the stamp of the Cypriot people, the Republic of Cyprus for the creation of an exemplary green space and a housing complex that will meet the housing needs of the weakest citizens. our houses whose catastrophic afternoon of July 2018 was destroyed ”.
"Act of fraternal solidarity"
Mr. Anastasiadis spoke about "an act of fraternal solidarity, a minimal return of gratitude for the support of Greece in the difficult times that the Cypriot Hellenism is going through, a support that is recorded in the depths of the centuries", noting that "it was the least that could we contribute to alleviating the pain of people who have been left homeless. "
"I sincerely feel that, today, we are signing a contract of fraternal ties that will give the opportunity with the construction of 98 housing units and a green space to relieve those who lived and experienced the disasters during the fire in Mati", added the President of the Republic of Cyprus .
