North Korea has launched a missile of unknown type in the direction of the Korean Sea, continuing a series of weapons tests that it has been conducting for several weeks, the South Korean General Staff informed today.

The staff did not provide details about the launch of the rocket, other than to clarify that it was ballistic.

Pyongyang continues its plans to develop nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles and other technologically advanced systems, in defiance of international sanctions.

The shooting came as U.S., South Korean and Japanese officials met in Seoul to discuss tensions with the isolated nuclear-armed state, South Korea's Yonhap state news agency reported.

Representatives of hundreds of international companies and armed forces officers from around the world are in Seoul for the inauguration of the International Aerospace and Defense Exhibition (ADEX), the largest of its kind ever held in South Korea.

The test came hours after Sung Kim, the US special envoy for North Korea, reiterated Washington's offer to Pyongyang to begin talks.

"We will continue on the diplomatic path (…) to make tangible progress that will improve the security of the United States and our allies," he said, adding, however, that the allies "have a responsibility to implement UN Security Council resolutions." sanctions that Pyongyang demands to be lifted.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un denounced the role of the United States last week, mocking Washington's assurances that it was not hostile or hostile to Pyongyang: "I wonder if there really are people or countries who believe this."

According to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, North Korea has launched two ballistic missiles.

Mr Kishinda described the Pyongyang series of missile tests, which began last month and is continuing, as "very sad".
