A school with its doors open for all children. The plan of the Municipality of Athens to create the appropriate conditions, which will allow students with disabilities to have easy access to school premises, is fully implemented.
Upon completion of the intervention, a total of 257 school units in all seven municipal districts of the city will have ramps and toilets, suitable for the disabled. The project of upgrading the school units aims to make the daily life of children with disabilities better in their educational environment.
According to the plan, in school complexes that, according to a study, it is not possible to install special ramps, a total of 131 electric lifts, elevators and portable mobile ramps will be constructed, in order to ensure unimpeded access to all school premises.
The beginning was made from the 2nd Special Primary and 2nd Special Kindergarten of Athens on Aristarchou Street, as well as from the 113th Kindergarten of Athens on Taygetou Street, where the technical services of the Municipality handed over for use the upgraded school units. Within the next two months, according to the plan, the works are expected to be completed in 15 more schools of the Municipality of Athens.
The 4,5m-euro budget project, which began last July with an 18-month horizon, is funded by the Interior Ministry's "Philodimos" program, as well as from its own resources. In this way, the commitment of the municipal authority to utilize every available source of funding is confirmed, in order to upgrade the infrastructure of the city, for the benefit of our fellow citizens who face mobility problems.
"People with disabilities deserve the respect of the city. Our primary goal is to do what we can to facilitate their lives and daily lives. The beginning was made from the school buildings, in which we gradually create the appropriate infrastructure for students with mobility problems, so that we can provide them with a school environment, friendly and safe. "Our commitment is that we will continue to work methodically for a city without discrimination and social exclusion, with equal treatment of all its citizens," said in a statement the Mayor of Athens, Costas Bakogiannis.
Interventions in school buildings are just one link in the "chain" of projects of the Municipality of Athens for people with disabilities. In the last two years, the municipal authority has been developing a series of interventions, which day by day make the city more humane, accessible and friendly to its inhabitants.
The center and the neighborhoods of the capital are gradually acquiring new ramps, parking spaces for the disabled with markings, road markings, free parking spaces for the disabled in the municipal parking lots, modern sports structures with logistical equipment and facilities for easy access for the disabled. for the better service of the citizens.
