A new Swedish scientific study correlates the number of people vaccinated in a family with a reduced chance of transmitting the coronavirus to its unvaccinated members. People in a family who are not immune to Covid-19, either because they were not vaccinated or because they did not acquire natural immunity after an illness, have an lower risk of infection and hospitalization as the number of immunized family members increases, either after their full vaccination or due to a previous illness.

Researchers at Umeα University, led by Peter Nordstrμm, a professor of geriatrics, published in the American medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine, analyzing 2021 data from nearly 1,8 million people from about 815.000 families with two to five almost 6% of immunocompromised individuals were diagnosed with coronavirus.

An inverse relationship was found between the number of family members who were now immune to coronavirus (vaccinated or natural) and the risk of Covid-19 infection and hospitalization for the rest of the family without immunity. The latter had a 45% to 97% lower risk of coronavirus infection, the higher the other members of their family with immunity: if there was one immune member in the family, the risk of infection of the others was 45% to 61% lower if the There were two members with immunity, the risk for the others was lower by 75% to 86%, with three members with immunity the risk reduction was 91% to 94%, while with four members it reached 97%. The rates were similar for serious infections that required hospitalization.

"The results of the study clearly show that vaccination is important not only for personal protection, but also for reducing coronavirus transmission, especially in families, which are a high-risk environment for such transmission," said Dr. Nordstrμm.
