At least 41 people have been killed in a suicide attack on a Shi'ite mosque in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, a Taliban stronghold.

According to eyewitnesses, there were several explosions at the Fatemieh Mosque in the center of Kandahar, the country's second most populous city.

"We were preparing for prayer when we heard gunshots. Two people entered the mosque and shot the guards, who responded with fire. One (of the perpetrators) blew himself up inside the mosque and then two others "also detonated the explosives they were wearing, said Sayed Rohullah, a mosque security worker. According to this source, the third suicide bomber was outside the building.

Dozens of people were killed in a similar attack on the Shiite mosque in the city of Kunduz last week. The Islamic State of Khorasan claimed responsibility.

A local Taliban spokesman confirmed that it was a "suicide attack" and that investigations were under way.

So far there is no taking responsibility. If the Islamic State takes responsibility, it will be the first time the extremist organization has struck Kandahar.

"Based on the information we have gathered from our hospitals, 41 people have been killed and about 70 injured," said Abdulhai Abbas, Kandahar health chief. Hospitals are full, he added. "There are too many corpses and wounded. We urgently need blood. "We ask all the local media in Kandahar to ask the people to come and donate blood."
