In the context of the three-year cycle of Mikis Theodorakis

In the context of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the beginning of the Greek Revolution

The National Opera honors Mikis Theodorakis with the presentation of his emblematic work It is worth it in poetry by Odysseas Elytis, on October 29 and 31 at the Stavros Niarchos Hall at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

The new performance of the work, with the Orchestra and the Choir of the National Opera, conducted by Stathis Soulis, with soloists George Dalaras and Dimitris Platanias and narrated by George Gallos, is the first event of the three-year cycle after Mikis Theodorakis of the composer and takes place in the context of the anniversary events for the 200 years since the Greek Revolution.

The production is implemented with the support of the donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (ISN) [www.SNF.org] for the creation of the anniversary program of the National Opera for the 200 years since the Greek Revolution of 1821.

Its execution It is worth it by the forces of the ELS in the context of the celebration of the two hundred years since the beginning of the Greek Revolution can only have a symbolic character. The It is worth it will be the first event of the cycle of Mikis Theodorakis after the death of the great Greek composer and it goes without saying that it is dedicated to his memory.

The fruit of the fertile and largely euphoric period of the early 60s, during which the trauma of the Civil War gradually receded into the past and new collectives enthusiastically sought their cultural expression, Theodorakis's work with the unprecedented designation "popular oratorio", based on the poetic work of life of Odysseus Elytis, was not only a milestone in modern Greek music and the career of the creator but also a revolutionary gesture of osmosis between the aesthetic and the political, the intellect and people, art and life.

Written at the urging of Elytis in the period 1960-61 and following Theodorakis' bold turn to folk music with his composition Epitaph of Giannis Ritsos, the It is worth it was recorded and released only in 1964 - the year of its international phenomenon Zorba and the election of the composer as a member of the EDA in NW Piraeus, district of the murdered Grigoris Lambrakis.

The delay was due to the composer's search for the fragile balance required by the daring composition of the popular material with the European tradition. At the same time, moreover, Theodorakis engaged in the progressive and patient work of acquainting the unskilled public with the symphonic aesthetics through the activity of the Athens Small Orchestra, which he founded in 1962.

The result justified him and unexpectedly became the most commercial of all his works. Undoubtedly, the success owed a lot to the artistic and symbolic weight of the actors of the first performance: the actor Theodoros Dimitriev in the part of the baritone-singer, Grigoris Bithikotsis-folk singer and Manos Katrakis-reader.

At the same time, the form of the work, which maintains the proportions and stylistic haircut of Elytis's poem, referring at the same time to the structural models of both Passion of Bach and the Orthodox Divine Liturgy, classifies it as a remarkable body of European works of the mid-20th century that combine neoclassical and religious references with current ideological negotiation, such as the A child of our time of Tippet and the, completely modern, War Requiem of Britten. Ark of the "memory of the people", but also an art imprint of an era, the It is worth it remains a challenging, active and open project to new, unexpected interpretive approaches.

In the new performance of the work by the National Opera, the music direction will be signed by one of the most up-and-coming chief musicians of the younger generation, Stathis Soulis. The part of the folk singer will be performed by the great George Dalaras, whose relationship with Theodorakis's work spans five decades, the baritone-singer will be played by the leading Greek baritone Dimitris Platanias, while the distinguished actor George will play the French . The Orchestra and the Choir of ELS participate.

The collaboration of George Dalaras with Mikis Theodorakis

George Dalaras met Mikis Theodorakis at the beginning of his career, in Paris in 1972, during the dictatorship. The first fruit of their cooperation was 18 small songs of the bitter homeland in poetry by Giannis Ritsou, published in 1974. They were followed by Red rose and He was alone and then the Radar (with lyrics by Costas Tripolitis) in 1981.

At the same time he took part in all the major post-political concerts in stadiums throughout Greece, but also later abroad (Cuba 1981, European tour with the "post-symphonic" works of Theodorakis 1990). In 1988 he interpreted the It is worth it, under the direction of the composer, in the two concerts given at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus to support the initiative to build the Acropolis Museum. This second execution of the project is released by Minos.

In 1995 George Dalaras celebrated the 70th anniversary of Mikis Theodorakis with two concerts with Metropolis Orchestra at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. The recording of the concert is released by EMI Classics. In the summer of 2001, George Dalaras performed works by Mikis Theodorakis with the Russian Osipov Orchestra in Delphi, at the official event for the 50th anniversary of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which was covered internationally. In 2002 he participated in the opera Lysistrata at the Athens Concert Hall, at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall and at the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus.
