A gunman opened fire on a supermarket in Tennessee, killing one person and injuring 12 others before the perpetrator committed suicide, U.S. police said today.
Authorities were alerted to a shooting incident at a Kroger supermarket in Collierville, a suburb of Memphis, at 13.30 local time (21.30 Greek time).
"When we got there, a lot of people were injured," said Dale Lane, Collieville Police Chief. Twelve of them were taken to hospital and one died, he confirmed. The gunman committed suicide with his weapon.
Collierville Police Chief described the scene as "horrific." "I have never seen anything like it in my 34 years of career," he said.
"We found people hiding in freezers and closed offices," Lane described.
