The Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni and the President of the International Foundation for Greece (IFG) Aspasia Leventi, accompanied by the Superintendent of Antiquities of the Cyclades, Dimitris Athanasoulis, conducted an autopsy at the archeological site of Delos.
The purpose of the autopsy was to discuss on the spot the procedures that will lead to the acceleration and implementation of the project "Delos: Open Museum", as designed by the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades with the cooperation and support of IFG. which since 2014 had expressed the intention to finance the construction of a new museum in Delos. The autopsy was attended by the Deputy Regional Governor of the Cyclades, George Leontaritis, the Mayor of Mykonos, Konstantinos Koukas, and officials of the Ministry of Culture.
As stated by Lina Mendoni:
"Delos is one of our most emblematic archeological sites, which gathers the interest of the international archaeological community, but also of thousands of tourists every year. However, the image of the site and the services provided to visitors, despite any infrastructure projects carried out in recent years, is not appropriate for a world-class archaeological site. We are launching the restoration and promotion of the space through a holistic approach, as the ancient ruins are an inseparable unit with the natural environment of the island. But also the movable monuments and where and how they will be exhibited, preserved, stored, are part of this whole. Any modern constructions that are necessary, must be assimilated in the space, designed with absolute respect for the environment and aiming at their zero footprint.
For this reason we launched the elaboration of a comprehensive plan for the restoration, promotion and management of the entire monumental reserve of the island, with the creation of museum infrastructure, which will include exhibition spaces, maintenance workshops, warehouses, facilities for hosting workers on the island, spaces reception and service of visitors, according to the building program prepared by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades and the Directorate of Studies and Works of Museums of the Ministry of Culture, which received the unanimous positive opinion of the Museum Council on July 26, 2021.
This strategic plan, as well as the studies for the creation of the new museum infrastructures, will be prepared with the sponsorship of the International Foundation for Greece. I would like to express my warm thanks to the President Aspasia Leventi and the Board of Directors of the Foundation for the IFG initiative and its decisive contribution to this extremely important project ".
At the end of the autopsy, Aspasia Leventi stated: "I am pleased to state that the major cultural vision of the International Foundation for Greece (IFG) regarding the undertaking of the construction of the New Archaeological Museum of Delos, after many years of efforts, goes to implementation. The meeting held in Delos between the leadership of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the founders of IFG is a seal and a springboard for our actions, so that we can soon inaugurate a museum according to the specifications set by the Ministry of Culture. A modern and bioclimatic museum, integrated in the environment and worthy of the history and splendor of this sacred island, which is the largest island archeological site in the world and a monument of UNESCO world heritage. We continue with a strong will and always the main goal is the universality of Hellenism and its values ".
