In fact, in an exceptional distribution-surprise, Xanthias is interpreted by Evi Saoulidou, the role of Dionysus the Maria Kechagioglou, while on the top stage of the speech match between Euripides and Aeschylus, we will enjoy Akilla Karazisi and Nikos Hatzopoulos.

The show
How important is poetic reason for the prosperity of our societies? In his hilarious but also highly contemplative satire, Aristophanes comments on the value of Poetry and Art. In her first direction at the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus, Argyro Chioti presents one of the most beloved aristocratic comedies, The Frogs.
This topical comedy is expected to offer a special experience of laughter and emotion, while triggering our reflection on the role of Poetry in our lives, in a time of great turmoil.
On July 9, 10 and 11, in the orchestra of the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus, Xanthias and Dionysos indulge in a comic but also anxious search for the poet who will save the city, which has lost its tragic poets. As the director says: "Diving into a comic Underworld, where everything is light and fluid, the people at the Frogs dance and sing acrobatically. Poetry becomes the purpose and the means for the upliftment of their heart and mind ".
Frogs
Frogs were first taught in 405 BC. in Lenaea and won the first prize. The main character is the god Dionysus (the god of theater in Greek mythology), who is deeply disappointed by the situation in which the theater has found itself. The great tragic poets are dead and the dramatic struggles are now worthless.
Thus, Dionysus decides to act and descend to the underworld, in order to bring back to life the best tragic poet. He takes his slave Xanthias with him and they embark on an adventurous journey, full of comic events. Arriving in Hades, they encounter a great upheaval, as two tragic poets, Aeschylus and Euripides, quarrel over who is better. The god Pluto then proposes to organize a dramatic competition between the two, with Dionysus taking on the role of referee.
It is one of the most famous and comic scenes of the ancient drama, which continues to give laughter to this day, as the excerpts that each poet proposes as the most important to judge, become the subject of ruthless and hilarious criticism by the other. The winner is Aeschylus, who returns to life with Dionysus.
In Frogs we see how important Theater and Poetry were in ancient Athens. It is also Aristophanes' reflection on the evolution of the tragedy, which he considered to have subsided, but also on the general crisis of values. A timeless work that always remains relevant and it is no coincidence that it is still one of the best known of Aristophanes and one of the most beloved of the public.
