The Municipal Authority from the first moment dealt with the issue of the homeless and the results are visible. Today, in the center of the city there is a modern accommodation of 400 beds, which accommodates our fellow human beings in conditions of dignity. Every night a group of specialists, accompanied by social workers and nurses, visits one by one the people who are still on the road.
They offer them every possible help and try to convince them to stay in the structures of the city.
Now, the Municipality of Athens goes one step further, adopting all the good practices of the big European cities and expanding its activities in order to minimize, if not eliminate homelessness in Athens. There is now the knowledge, the way, but also the appropriate means.
The "umbrella" of protection that has already been created for the vulnerable population of the capital grows with the adoption of the "Charter of Homeless Rights - FEANTSA" by the Municipality of Athens. Another important step in recognizing the fundamental rights of all people to housing, employment, education and health.
The Charter, among other things, provides for the right of the homeless to housing, to use and move freely in public space, to equal treatment, to basic sanitation facilities, to decent housing in an emergency, to emergency services, to privacy, but also to protection of their data.
The adoption of this framework confirms the commitment of the Municipal Authority to continue the great effort, so that all citizens have a standard of living capable of ensuring health for themselves and their families, well-being and a normal life, without exclusions and discrimination. A hospitable roof, food, clothing, but also medical care.
It has been co-signed by several big cities from different European countries, and from our country.
