The suspension of regular surgeries and outpatient clinics in the country's public hospitals due to coronavirus will lead to a boom in the waiting list of surgeries, warns POEDIN.
The president of the Federation, Michalis Giannakos, calls on the government to find a solution to the issue of ICUs, as in many hospitals operating rooms and resuscitation rooms have been converted into temporary Intensive Care Units with substandard equipment.
"Hospitals for the second wave of the pandemic have been turned into hospitals for the treatment of a disease. "Even now, the suspension of regular surgeries and regular outpatient clinics is valid," says Mr. Giannakos.
"ICUs are less than needed to deal with pandemics and other diseases. According to the government, there are more than 1.100 beds, while in reality we have 750, instead of 3.500 beds that had to be operated on the basis of hospital beds ".
"The government considers operating rooms, resuscitation rooms, cardiac surgery units, clinic rooms that have been converted with substandard equipment as ICUs. Although they are now licensed by intubated patients, they remain as ICU-COVID, waiting for the third wave ", notes the president of POEDIN.
"Especially in the Hospitals of Northern Greece and Thessaly. "But because of this, serious surgeries continue to be postponed, with the result that the morbidity of other diseases increases", he emphasizes.
"In order for patients to be operated on in the Public Hospital, their health must be burdened and they must reach emergencies as emergencies. "Regular clinics do not work to examine patients and schedule regular surgeries."
"The existing lists of surgeries are no longer valid. No new ones are issued. "The dates given for surgery are canceled. Patients are notified that their surgery is postponed without receiving a new date", he underlines.
"Those who have money are operated on in the private sector. The rest are waiting. The waiting list will be launched over two years ".
"Finally, a solution must be found with the ICUs. The departments that now host the temporary ICUs to return for the organic purpose they were created for. "Patients are lost after being on a waiting list for many years", Mrs.
